In Vermont, it’s hard not to develop something of a fondness for animals, especially when you’re more likely to encounter them than people. We have shared the majority of our lives with animals of all sorts: goats, Tibetan yak, fancy rats, border collies, Maine Coon cats, cows, tilapia, chickens…

And that did it. After an assortment of chicks from some very rare breeds became a wedding present from groom to bride, chickens have become a central theme in our lives, especially a particularly soft spot for Hedemora.

Our birds are non-vaccinated, and free-ranged when able, with great care spent in their breeding using a system called clan or spiral mating to broaden as much genetics as possible.

Oft have I found its shelter. When the stress
Of warring winds, and sharp tumultuous storms
Have left me spent and breathless on the field,
Then my swift thoughts, for healing and for rest,
Bear me away to peaceful Avalon.

-Emily Huntington Miller “From Avalon”
